After an intense qualification period and 3 days of battle, the DAIGON School Esports World Championships (SEWC) has wrapped, but the light it shone on scholastic esports will last far longer. Hosted during PLAYCON, in Malta, this inaugural event was more than a tournament; it was a combination of education, technology, and fierce competitive spirit, uniting student-athletes from seven countries and four continents.

Over three days, these teams, qualified through DAIGON’s partnerships with COBIS, ISA, ECIS, and BSME, battled across two titles in three categories. The competition was incredibly tight, proving that the future of competitive gaming talent is already flourishing in the classroom.

The Grand Final Breakdown: Global Titles Decided

The final day saw the top teams from the group stages face off in intense semi-finals and thrilling Grand Finals. Strategy, communication, steady nerves and teamwork proved to be decisive across all three competitive brackets.

The Rocket League Arena: Speed, Strategy, and a Lycée Victory

The Rocket League competition, demanding exceptional coordination and lightning-fast reflexes, delivered high-octane drama from start to finish. Teams navigated the zero-gravity field in a relentless pursuit of the perfect aerial pass or demolition.

The Grand Final pitted the precision and control of Lycée International de Londres (LIL) against the tenacity of the Al Yasat Private School (UAE). LIL’s team executed flawless rotations and clinical finishing, ultimately overwhelming their opponents with a dominant performance to secure the 3-0 victory and claim the inaugural Rocket League World Championship title.

The third-place match saw the Chatmore British International School (Bermuda) earn a well-deserved place on the podium, capping off an incredible performance by the team who traveled all the way from the North Atlantic.

Minecraft 13+ CTF: The Golden Flag Decides the World Title

Perhaps the most nail-biting final of the day came in the 13+ Minecraft Capture the Flag (CTF) bracket. This competition tests not just building and combat skills, but complex team management and resource allocation—the definition of 21st-century teamwork.

The Grand Final clash between Centennial Schools (South Africa) and Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate (QE Seniors) (UK) was a masterclass in strategic defence and daring raids. With the clock winding down, the teams were inseparable, forcing the match into a tense Golden Flag Overtime. In a moment of pure strategic brilliance, Centennial Schools executed a flawless final push, seizing the decisive flag to take the championship title in spectacular fashion.

The Bronze Medal match was equally contested, with St Christopher's Prep School (UK) holding off the International School Hannover Region (Germany) to complete the podium.

Minecraft U13 CTF: BISR's Dominance

The youngest category, U13 Minecraft CTF, showcased a phenomenal depth of talent. These young players demonstrated sophisticated game mechanics and advanced collaborative tactics far exceeding their age.

The final saw the British International School Riyadh (BISR) square off against Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate (QE Juniors). While the U12 team from QE fought bravely, BISR’s tactical command and superior execution proved too much to overcome. BISR delivered a commanding performance to win the final with a 4-1 scoreline, crowning them the first-ever U12 Minecraft World Champions.

Looking Ahead: The SEWC Blueprint

The first ever SEWC was a definitive success, proving that school esports can deliver world-class competition alongside educational enrichment. The seamless collaboration between DAIGON Esports, GamingMalta, PLAYCON, and our global school association partners (COBIS, ISA, ECIS, BSME) has established a powerful blueprint.

Congratulations to all the champions and every student who participated. You didn't just compete; you made history, solidifying Malta's role as the new global stage for esports in education. We are already looking forward to the qualifiers for next year!
